Join us for this Episode of Exploring Mind and Body as Drew and Dorothy talk about what it was like to welcome a homeless man into their home for the night.

Bing Bing Lei, spreading equal and unconditional love for all. Amazing individual walking around the world, homeless and won't accept money, only food donations and sometimes a place to stay.
When he asked, we didn't think twice. Why wouldn't you let someone stay with you that needed shelter? Why wouldn't you feed someone that was hungry?

Bing walked out of our lives as quietly and smoothly as he walked in. Wouldn't take food because he had enough, didn't want the lights on because he didn't want to waste energy. Didn't take up much space because he didn't need it.

He showered, washed his clothes, shared stories of living on the road and likely gave us much more than we gave him.

Tommy’s mission in life is to empower individuals and business leaders to rediscover their brilliance, achieve meaning, balance and true happiness in life without compromising their financial success. His work and legacy are to provide humans with the tools and skills to become the person they've always dreamed of being.

Beginning with Deloitte, Tommy achieved 20 years of business notoriety and financial success as a large firm financial consultant. However, he was unfulfilled, had lost balance and filled with unhealthy amounts of stress because he felt trapped in a prestigious career. Tommy felt forced to make decisions out of fear and scarcity instead of abundance. He felt like he did not have a choice.

His experiences led him to found Choose Goodness, a movement encouraging individuals and business organizations to search for unmet human needs that create transformational impact on themselves, their business, and society at large. Both Tommy and Choose Goodness provide both the rational and emotional perspectives to the strategic and financial decision-making process

Part CEO, part personal development wonk, and part biohacker info geek, Thom King is
a self-confessed serial entrepreneur. While his favorite book list contains many success-oriented and personal-development classics, the traditional definition of achieving success (e.g. make a lot of money) is not what inspires or motivates King. He follows more of a “you aren’t doing well unless you’re also doing some good” line of thinking. King’s company has been built around the simple principle of
“do the right thing.”

In 1999, Thom’s personal passion for food and his concern over the explosion of metabolic disease led him to found Steviva Brands, now known as Icon Foods, with a mission to stem the tide of “diabesity” by providing consumers healthy alternatives to sugar. In recent years, his passion for food and optimal health have intersected with his embrace of a ketogenic (low carb, high fat) diet. Thom’s latest project is a line of ketogenic condiments intended to help more people successfully adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Thor Conklin is an Entrepreneur, Profitability Consultant and host of his daily podcast, Peak Performers Podcast.  2018 marks his 18th year as an entrepreneur.  The first company Thor created was a global risk management consulting firm that served the private equity community.  His top 15 clients had a combined revenue of $12.7 billion USD and operated in over 100 countries worldwide. His background, in risk management, served him well when he lost 1/3 of his team, in the World Trade Center attacks, on 9/11.  Since that time, he has started, bought and sold several multi-million dollar businesses making him a sought after, cross-industrial resource for entrepreneurs and executives in all stages of business.

Thor has a talent for slicing through the noise of every day distractions and bringing his clients and audiences intellectual commodities like his: “Ultimate Success Map”, a simplistic, easy-to- follow guide for individuals who need to break through to the next level of achievement.

96% of business fail within 10 years.  The ONLY reason they fail is lack of Profits.  Of the 4% that do survive, many only produce enough profits to break even, pay the owner a meager wage or provide shareholders below market returns.  Mr. Conklin’s extensive background and expertise allows him to not only identify the specific profitability killers that are siphoning off profits but work with the business to fix them.  Despite the leader’s best efforts, many business owners and executive cannot see these profitability killers as they are too close to the company.

Thor’s gritty, no nonsense and direct approach uncovers the real truth about what is holding people and organizations back from realizing their full potential.  He can illuminate even the most successful and confident leader’s limiting beliefs. He is known as the Accountability & Execution Guy.

Through his consulting firm, Peak Performance Group, he teaches the tools, tips, tricks, psychology and strategies necessary to be a Peak Performer. He qualifies the psychology of success in one word: Execution”!  “Nothing you’ve learned matters – unless you can EXECUTE”!

You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.

I am a life long resident of Red Deer and over my life span I have worked for a corporation, owned small businesses and been involved in several non profit boards. I have been married to my wife Cindy for 35 years and had 4 children, John my oldest then James, Stephanie and Lindsey. The Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce has been my job for the last 14 years in my role as manager of membership & community relations. Our lives were turned upside down with the loss of our youngest daughter Lindsey.

Lindsey took her life 2 years ago at the age of 22 suffering from depression, an illness we never knew she battled. I have been down a road no parent ever wants to go down and on this journey I am trying to learn about mental health and depression. After Lindsey’s death Cindy and I started a self-directed endowment fund in honor of our amazing daughter.

November of 2015 we started Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation to raise funds for mental health in our youth. In the short 2 years the foundation has raised close to $250,000 from many fund raising events that have been created by our business community. We will continue to finance programs that will impact our youth that have suffered this illness alone because of the many stigmas surrounding this topic.

Recently we have given $10,000 to the Catholic Schools for mental Health First Aid and just yesterday donated $10,000 to public schools for resources to help students from K- Grade 5. I will continue to advocate the Government to implement and direct health care dollars to mental health.

Do you remember the name Crowley who in 1931 was deemed one of the most dangerous criminals NYC has ever seen. Kind of odd that a man who's nick name was 'two gun' didn't think he was wrong. In fact in a letter he wrote about himself, he mentioned his "weary and kind heart that wouldn't harm anyone".

After being sentenced to the electric chair Crowley said, 'this is what I get for defending myself'.

How about Al Capone, we remember his name. A notorious gangster that ran the streets of NYC and then Chicago's. Well, he didn't think he was wrong either.

He said, "I've spent the best years for my life giving people the lighter pleasures, helping them have a good time".

Recently I was working with a group I wasn't getting the results I wanted. I thought to myself over and over again, why aren't they doing this or that, why can't they understand?

Then I thought to myself, what I am doing wrong. At first, I couldn't figure it out, my directions were clear, my expectations didn't seem to be too much.

But I continued to think 'how can I change', 'how can I make an adjustment to get them to response differently'.

The truth is, we never think we're wrong, it's always the other person/people. Many times we're pointing the finger but don't take responsibility.

So here's what happened, I changed my attitude, my perspective, changed the program and you know what. This group changed too. They started doing what was expected, what was asked. The energy changed in the room, they got more out of it and so did I.

Something to think about if you aren't getting the end result you're looking for. Maybe, just maybe, it's not them. It's you.

I’ve decided that I’d like to do something this year for those in need. I’ve wanted to do this for awhile now but never took the initiative. It seems like more than ever local families are in need. I also understand food banks could use our help more than ever.

I know there are so many organizations out there that are doing incredible things. Organizations I could help out, in fact, when I tell people what I’d like to do, many say, ‘why don’t you help _____’.

The truth is, I want to do my own thing, but I want to do it together. I could have helped another organization but truthfully besides some food items here or a gift there, I haven’t done as much as I’d like to.

Others say, ‘wait till you have more time to plan’, when I hear that I think to myself, how many families can we help this year that will appreciate that I don’t wait for another year. I think, how many families could we have helped if I started this 5 years ago when I first thought of it.

So I’ve decided to start a Campaign called:
‘100 Boxes for 100 Local Families’.

In this show I talk about why January is the WORST time to start any type of health and wellness program.

Research shows only 8% of people get past January when starting a program in the new year.

Then we have financial issues with all the Christmas gift spending. Packed gyms, colder weather, icy roads, not to mention being in a new environment while tons of other people are standing around waiting for equipment.

On top of all that with the unhealthy habits we are creating now with Christmas parties, desserts, appetizers and more, we're pretty much setting ourselves up for failure in the New Year.

More on why you should start today in the show!

With Thanksgiving coming up I thought I'd offer some Thanksgiving Holiday Nutrition Tips which can be used during any holiday season.

This is a difficult time of year for many with so many temptations right in our face, which lasts all day for some. Then the next day with treats, desserts and leftovers.

It's important to understand we're developing habits right now, many in which that are unhealthy. So when it come to make lifestyle changes we find results come that much harder because of the habits we're developing right now.

Show Notes:

- Eat before you go

- Bring something healthy to eat

- Avoid deep fried appetizers

- Know that you don't 'have' to drink just because everyone else is

- Fill your plate with veggies first or fill your first plate full of veggies then go back for more

- Avoid the all day marathon of overindulging. If possible stay for one meal.

- Plan a meal for when you got home

I recently took a trip to the Big Apple and I had such an incredible experience I wanted to share it with you. The buzz of the City that never sleeps alone is something I've never experienced before. It actually took me a couple days after I left to realize how much actually goes on there.

When you're in it, in most things in life it takes awhile for you to take a step back and realize what actually happened.

From homeless people to those that lived in apartments that cost $10,000 a month! It such a crazy and incredible experience to see so many different things, feel different emotions, brush shoulders with thousands of people in a day and feel the exhaustion of all of that at the end of a day.

There is so much to do is NYC I feel like you could go there for a month and still not see everything. But what I did see and what a I did experience, I share with you in this show. I hope you enjoy.

We all know how great it feels to open up the windows and get rid of old junk or things we haven't used all winter when spring rolls around. When you open the windows you are not only bringing fresh air in the house but new energy as well.

It's the same as getting rid of things you don't use or need. You feel so much better because you are releasing stagnant energy as well, which is why it's so important in learning stagnant energy on a regular basis. This keeps our stress levels own, we have less emotional baggage and our spirits are lifted as we walk around with less weight on our shoulders.

Winter is coming (or is mostly here) BLAH. There is little to look forward to except more winter BLAH ;). The days are shorter, nights are longer, less Sunshine, less activity, less fresh air. A whole lot of things that wake us up, make us feel good and give us energy is gone.

It's important to recognize this and take action before we're stuck in 'winter depression' which is pretty difficult to get out of.  It's easy to curl up on the couch, and do nothing because it's cold and dark outside. Then of course there's winter weight, more misery, comfy clothes ;), an unending cycle of less than positive stuff going on.

Time to take action TODAY before our unhealthy habits turn into rituals.

In this show I talk about the benefits of going full tilt and avoiding going through the motions. What I've found when putting all the effort in I could possibly muster and what I've found the odd time when I don't.

I've also share some experiences working with others when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle and if you want to see results there really is no other way.

I understand we an automatic knee jerk reaction when it comes to the word failure but when you think about it and if we break it down, we can realize failure is a good thing. In fact as many of us know, without failure there is no success. Which doesn't mean we still don't fear it.

In this show I talk about how we need failure to succeed in the gym. Why we have to fail if we want to find success with our health and fitness goals. I hope this show helps you understand failure helps us push past our limits, it helps us find out what those limits are, how to push past our comfort zone (and find out what it is).

Show Notes:

  • pushing past your comfort zone
  • failure is the only way to see results
  • failure is our friend, not an enemy
  • trying new things will help you get better at both the new things and past things
  • push past your limits
  • a small amount of failure should encourage you to succeed

Pre workout nutrition comes up quite a bit, truthfully I stay away from this question because it can become quite complicated. Depending on your goals, your sport time of day you're working out, how long your workout, etc all play a vital role in what type of nutrition you should be consuming before a workout.

In this show I go over the very basics of what you should be having nutrition wise before a meal. Understand that this could vary depending on where you're at with your fitness routine but make no mistake about it, nutrition before a workout is very important when considering optimal health and getting the most out of a workout.

  • why I don't believe in carb loading (for pretty much any sport, activity or workout)
  • the importance of consuming balanced meals
  • how fats are slow burning and fuel your works
  • complex carbohydrates are also slow burning and should be consumed before a workout
  • look for light and easy meals to digest before a workout. An example of this would be: a quinoa salad, with avocado, and chick peas (or chicken breast)
  • snack meals before a workout would include - avocado and salsa, peanut butter and banana
  • stay away from low quality protein supplements before a workout
  • I highly recommend Complete Truth Protein supplement before a workout

Louise Landry is nothing short of inspirations as we talk about how she will accept no limitations. At age 56, a stroke survivor and more active than people half her age, Louise continues to push her limits and inspire those around her.

Louise has been a part of Monthly Membership since is started over a year ago (at the time of this post/recording) and has been with us for whole food detoxes before hand. Along with workouts throughout the week, weekly yoga and NIA classes Louise stays active all the time.

As a stroke survivor and limitations in eye sight and her left arm Louise doesn't let anything hold her back, in fact you might say she does more than the average person regardless of what limitation might be put in front of her.

Dorothy and I traveled to Lethbridge to run with Louise for her first 5K after training for only 4 months. She'll tell you herself she doesn't love running, but I think the challenge is what keeps her going. She actually signed up for another 5k that she hopes to run in the winter to raise money for the food bank.

In this interview I asked Louise if she had any advice for someone that might say they are too old to set a new goal or go after something that might interest them. She said, 'give it a shot, there's always a way around any limitation you may seem to have. Take it slow, schedule your workouts in and work progressively toward your goals'.

Truly an inspiration. Thank you for all that you do Louise, we couldn't be happier we found you.

There are so many benefits to working out at home instead of the gym. I hear complains about traffic to and from the gym, lack of time to workout, the extra costs of gym fees and more. So I thought, why not write down some tips on why workout at home instead of the gym.

5 Reasons to Workout at Home

More efficient workouts

Gyms were meant for body builders, from squat racks to isolation machines. If you're not a body builder and you aren't injured, you can get a whole lot more out of your workout by doing more functional movements that are efficient and will get you the results you're looking for.

Save Time

There is driving time, there is traffic, there is even waiting in line to check in. Avoid all that by working out at home.

Save Money

Gyms fees, money for gas, possibly parking fees. Course there are hidden fees, even cancellation fees. New shoes, gym clothes and more. It seems like there is always a reason to spend more money when you are working out at a gym. Workout at home and by pass all those extra fees.

Waiting for Equipment

This goes along with saving time. It seems like especially when you're in a rush there is always someone on the machine you want. There's a good chance no one is working out in the same area you are when you're at home.

Avoid the Creepy Guy

We all know what it's like to be watched by the creepy guy. He's likely asked you for your phone number or is thinking about it as he engages in awkward conversation while you're trying to get your workout in.

There are so many nutrition myths out there, so much misconception, so many 'perceived truths', which I why I decided to put down my top 5 nutrition myths. There is information coming from every angle, but is it valid, is because 'we've always done it that way', or maybe there's even truth to it. Regardless, let's stir the pot a bit and give you something different to consider.

Top 5 Nutrition Myths

#1. Gatorade

'For hydration and electrolytes' FALSE! - Gatorade has toxics, colouring, sugar and more. Any product that has ingredients you can't read, pronounce or spell, I highly recommend staying away from.

#2. Dairy Milk

'Milk does a body body good', for many this is false as well. Now I'm not saying everyone should stay away from cow's milk or dairy products but if you have digestion issues, if your child has sleep issues or if you get nasally after your morning bowl of cereal or glass of milk with dinner you should consider trying a different type of milk.

Course whatever issue you may have doesn't always have to do with milk or dairy. We should consider everything we put in our body and learn and understand if it's harmful or nutritional. Milk is at the very least worth considering given it's in the top 3 allergens in most lists.

#3. Meat Protein

'You need meat protein to gain muscle' FALSE - today we have more vegan athletes than ever which include bodybuilders, long distance athletes and more. You don't need meat protein in every meal and you certainly don't need protein from meat to gain muscle.

#4. Counting Calories

Counting calories could very well be the least positive thing you do for your health. Every calorie is not created equally. More times than not, counting calories does more damage than good thinking we're doing a good thing for our body for example when we consume '100 calories' or proceed food for example thinking it's healthy because it only has 100 calories.

#5. Supplements

This one may be hard to believe but in most cases supplements do more damage than good. No question low quality, cheap and discounted supplements are detrimental to our health, increase toxins and are simply harmful.

Look for good quality supplements or stick with food and get your nutritions from whole foods.

On this show I'm joined by Adam and Shoshana Chaim from the Plant Trainers podcast who actually interview me on this edition of Exploring Mind and Body

Drew's passion for baseball led him to research about nutrition and workouts to help him stay on the field longer and move up the ranks from College to the professional level. He started experimenting with his own body and tested which food made him quicker, stronger and what foods would even help him heal quicker.

He eventually discovered that plant-based nutrition can make a big difference in his performance as an athlete. He became stronger, healthier and even slept better. He started to have more mental clarity than ever. The secret, all the while, was the food that he was putting into his body.  This eventually led him to design "Complete Truth Protein", which is a whole food supplement.

Now, he is now a full time health and wellness advocate hosts his nationally syndicated radio talk show is author of "Detoxify Yourself"and has a new passion of helping other live healthy lives.

It's been awhile since I decided to get rid of cell phone, and it's been awhile since I talked about it. 9 months later I still haven't hooked up my phone so I thought I would share some of my 'no cell phone challenges'.

No it's not always easy but it's still the best decision I made both in my business and personal life. I'm not constantly interrupted when I'm working on a project, I'm not continually looking at my phone when I'm out with friends and family and I'm not thinking about who's said what on social media when I'm not directly on social media.

I do continue to have a few challenges which include:

  • People are actually insulted when they ask me for my number and I tell them I don't have one. They don't think I'm telling the truth. This is always awkward because the only number I can give them is my toll free number (888-572-5552) which you can only leave a message for.
  • Verification is a frustrating challenge. Most online services from social media to to banks, when they want to verify it's your account want to send a message to your phone.
  • Business meetings are another challenge. People want to know what number than can reach me. I can avoid this by offering my email address but some insist on calling.
  • This real frustration is really on the other side that I can understand. Family and friends find it frustration when they can't call or text me. Even though there is social media, Skype, FaceTime, email and more. But again I can understand this challenge.

A three-kilometre fun run with his sons in 1981 was the catalyst for the then-out-of-shape, overweight John Stanton to realize he had to change his lifestyle. A food industry executive who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, he began running secretly before dawn because he felt self-conscious about having his neighbours see "this chubby little guy" who could only run from lamp post to lamp post before having to take a walk break.

John went on to run over 60 marathons, hundreds of road races and numerous triathlons, including the Hawaiian World Championship Ironman competition. His pre-dawn runs would ultimately become John Stanton's 10:1 run/walk combination that has helped close to a million people do everything from learn to run to complete marathons, upright and smiling.

Show Notes:

  • part of Edmonton road runners
  • running with respect
  • no age limits to running
  • building a community
  • benefits of running
  • nutrition and running - rewards vs fuelling your body
  • making time vs 'I don't have time'

I have been loving teaching yoga in Vegreville for about 6 years. I find the reason that I love to do yoga myself is that I always feel better for it! And it is for this reason that I love to teach yoga - because it is so gratifying to be able to help other people feel better too! Prior to my certification, I worked for fifteen years in the school system as an Educational Assistant, so it was an easy transition to teaching in the studio.

I came to the practice myself for the physical benefits, as I think many in our Western culture do. But I quickly found that many of the practices, though simple, were very profound. The act of simply becoming aware of your breath and your body, and how you're feeling physically, mentally, emotionally, can have such a huge impact on stress and anxiety levels. Yoga translates as yoke or union, and by simply reconnecting our physical, spiritual and mental aspects, we can come to find more balance in our lives.

I am married to Cam, and we are happy parents to six grown children and two grandchildren. We live and work on a farm south of Vegreville, as well as work together in another business. Aside from my love of yoga, I enjoy time with our family, the outdoors, hiking, snowboarding, and water sports.

In this show I wanted to talk about the importance of a team. It's seems like more than ever I'm starting to realize how important a team is not only in business but in life. Think about your work place, there's a good chance you work with a team. You have a boss or manager, you have coworker and other employees all doing different things but working together for one purpose.

This is no different than a family. Each one of our family members contribute in some way. Course sports is no different. Everyone has one goal, everyone has a job or an objective and without that part done, we miss a big part of what we're trying to accomplish.

Nephrologists had the reputation of being a ‘thinkers’ specialty. There are a lot of intricacies of fluid and electrolytes, and I enjoyed these puzzles. I studied Nephrology at the University of California, Los Angeles mostly at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and the VA Wadsworth. Looking back, I realize that it must have been a little disconcerting to patients in the hospital to be treated by a doctor who looked about 18 years old.

I returned to Toronto in 2001 to start my career in Nephrology, where I still have both an office and hospital practice. Type 2 diabetes is by far and away the leading cause of kidney disease, and I treat many hundreds of patients with this disease. Many also have obesity. By the early 2010s my interest in nutrition, combined with my professional focus on obesity and T2D had led me directly to the diabesity puzzle.

In our current day and age, we are using the quickest, least personal, and least effective means of communication possible; texting. So much information about what the other person is thinking and feeling is lost and left up to interpretation. This is often the cause of relationship issues; we are lacking personal connection and the understanding that we are all just human beings, real people.

In this episode, Drew talks about his recent, refreshing experience with talking on the phone with some of his listeners. He talks about why he wanted to talk to them in this way, how it went, and how beneficial it could be to incorporate more of this interpersonal communication in our everyday lives.

5 Worst Detoxes Ever was inspired by the constant news I hear about so many try a 3 day detox to improve their health.

I don't agree with short detoxes or fasts, I feel that many times we actually put more stress on our bodies by removing all nutrients and even some toxins. Take sugar for example. We as a society are addicted to sugar, which means if we remove all sugar our bodies go through withdrawals which puts an enormous amount of stress on our bodies both mentally and physically.

The the higher road, moving in a sustainable manner, step by step is the way to see sustainable results. So let's get into the 5 Worst Detoxes Ever!

Shin Splints How to Prevent and Treat is something I wanted to talk about because the question just happened to come up in our Monthly Membership from Dallas. I love questions because it gives me a better idea of what you want to know, so let's talk about shin splints!

Show Notes:

The first thing you should know is if you do nothing they will absolutely get worse. You don't want them to get worse because then they'll get in the way of you reaching your health and fitness goals.

Undestanding what shin splints are - which is muscles actually tearing away from the bone, should help encourage your to do more things to prevent.

Regarding Prevention

It's important to check your shoes and make sure they aren't too old. 90% of people wear shoes far past the time they should be replaced. This causes issue from everything to knee and ankle pain to shin splints. Replace your shoes on a regular basis especially if you're running on them.

Pay attention to surfaces you're running on - hard surfaces i.e. concrete will cause shin splints so try to run on a track, grass or even dirt.

Tape from time to time before shin splints come if possible. Find a professional to help.

Compression socks are another great way to prevent shin splints.

Always heat before activity and ice afterwards.

Strengthen - use a rubber band, walk backwards, or crunch a towel with your toes.

The Wizard of OZ is without a doubt my all time favourite movie which is why I wanted to talk about the Nutrition of OZ. I have a deep love for food, real food, food that naturally energizes your body; that heals, cures and prevents. I also have a deep childhood love of everything about the Wizard of OZ.

So I thought, why not put the two together? In this show I'll be comparing the 4 main nutrients our bodies need in each and every meal, and I'll also be matching up the similarities between the main characters of the Wizard of Oz and how they relate to one another.

Show Notes:

Dorothy - fibre and antioxidants from fruit and veggies the main character of the movie and what should be the main character of your nutrition.

The Cowardly Lion - protein and the myth behind them both.

The Tin Man - Heart Healthy Fats and how the two are related.

The Scarecrow - directly linked to carbs because carbs don't make you fat and you need energy from them. As much energy as the scarecrow has.

I feel it's so important to support local which is why I brought on Erin Braybrook who is the owner of the Carstairs Flower Shop Sparkling Dahlia. I wouldn't say it's the easiest thing to do to start your own business, in fact for me personally it's the hardest thing I've ever done.

The truth is, many of us that start our own businesses rely on local to support to run a business, feed ourselves and our families and without that local support, the service simply isn't available anymore.

Given businesses should be run correctly, there should be comparable prices, the customer service should always be on par and the quality of products should be there as well.

In this interview I ask Erin, what supporting local means to her, how and why she started her business, how difficult it can be, what the long hours are like and deep down, why she decided to put her shop up in the first place.

On this episode of Exploring Mind and Body I have the opportunity to interview Donald Altman who is the author of Clearing Emotional Clutter. I feel like so many of us carry around our past, we're weighed down emotionally and haven't learned how to let go.

I like the example Donald used in the interview as he talks about Hoarding. Many of us have watched the show hoarders, and many of us have thought, 'how could they live that way'. I'd imagine if you could look deep into our emotions, you'll find emotional hoarding in most of us.

As a psychotherapist Donald has an interesting way of looking at the mind and helping us understand how to let go of mind clutter. He even discusses how we can retrain our brain and way of thinking so we can have more positive thoughts and emotions.

Who is Donald Altman?

Donald Altman is the author of Clearing Emotional Clutter, One-Minute Mindfulness, and several other books about mindfulness. He is a practicing psychotherapist and former Buddhist monk. An award-winning writer and an expert on mindful eating, he teaches in the neurobiology program at Portland State University.  Visit him online at http://www.mindfulpractices.com.

I wanted to talk about relationship weight gain because the truth is, it's easier to gain weight in a relationship. I want to thank Dallas for bringing the topic up and asking me to offer my insight on the subject.

In this post I'm going to give you 5 tips in 5 minutes on relationship weight gain, why it happens and why it's easier to gain weight when you are in a relationship.

I would like to note before I get started, I'm not saying you will gain weight if you get in a relationship, I'm just saying it can be easier. And of course you may find the exact opposite happen if you get together with someone who loves working out and eating healthy because then you can do this together and live healthier, however that's rarely the case.

5 Tips in 5 Minutes:

Comfort

When you find someone you enjoy being with many times its enough to simply be with them. You don't have to go out, buy dinner, dress fancy. You simply enjoy each others company which means you're perfectly comfortable doing nothing but sitting on the couch watching a movie.

The only downfall to this is, not only do you go out for dinner less but you tend to go for walks less, or other other activities that helps burn calories.

Self Imagine

Let's be honest here, you found your love, you're in a relationship and many people get 'comfortable' with their self image. No doubt a positive, we should all strive to be comfortable in our own skin, be confident in what we look like and have a positive self imagine.

However, if you gain a few lbs you notice it less. If you eat an unhealthy meal, no big deal, sweat pants and a sweater lounging around won't show the pizza every weekend for a month anyways. If you miss a few workouts, you don't think about it much because you're cozy at home and aren't going out as much anyways.

Lack of Support

We feed off of each other especially in a relationship. If one person doesn't feel like eating a healthy dish it's much easier to say, 'fine let's order take out'. If one person doesn't support your workouts for example then you feel guilty leaving the kids with them.

Having Some Help

We know what it's like not to have any help. You have a job, kids, then you have to prepare meals and all by yourself. Lack of help seems like you're trying to run in quick sand while someone is standing there watching you. What's worse is if it's a loved one, and you can't figure out why they won't help.

Support and help mean everything, unfortunately if you don't get that help, it's much easier for you to skip that healthy meal, toss a frozen pizza in the over or have microwave popcorn for dinner instead.

Extra Time

Extra time isn't something we have. In the last tip we talked about family, kids, job and a spouse...one that likely doesn't help to boot. So we certainly feel we don't have time. We don't have time to make a grocery list, plan our meals for the week, plan our workouts or go to the gym.

It's time consuming to do all these extra things, and it's much easier to simply skip it all together.

But Wait! .....There's Hope!

I understand relationship weight gain, in fact I see it all the time. It could be a friend you haven't seen for a number of weeks or a number of months and you finally see them and can't figure out where that 10lbs came from. A new relationship would be a good guess.

Not all relationships cause you to gain weight but it is common especially if you don't have that support with or from them.

But there is hope and that's why it's so important to find a supportive community to be a part of. Of like minded individuals that want to live healthy, that can offer that support, that ask and answer questions. A supportive community means everything ESPECIALLY if you don't have it at home.

But Wait There's More

Within our monthly membership we also offer meal plans that include recipes and grocery shopping lists to save you time in the grocery store in the kitchen. And we cover fitness too, with all at home weekly workouts (no equipment required).

If you're looking for a supportive community, a safe place that will offer a positive influence on your life, for more details click here.

Binge eating is a major topic because we all do it in some way or another. We could have serious eating disorders or we could have trouble picking up a bag of chips and not finishing the whole thing. Whatever it is we all deal with binge eating on some level which is why I want to discuss how to overcome binge eating.

In this show I go over 4 levels of Binge Eating, which include understand stress and how your stress levels contribute to binge eating.

Emotional eating goes hand in hand with binge eating which it's why I'll talk about that next. Self sabotage is also a major subject that needs to be addressed and finally we'll go over letting go of the past, and help you understand what's weighing us down and how to let go.

#1. Stress

If we can understand that stress is the main reason we binge eat then we'll give ourselves a better opportunity to overcome bing eating.

It's so important to work on releasing that stress valve with consistent and conscious effort because we don't have a natural stress release. Writing, getting away, talking about your stress, and especially exercise are all ways to help you reduce stress which will ultimately help you overcome binge eating.

#2. Emotional Eating

Emotional eating goes hand in hand with binge eating. If can better understand when our emotions are high, look to find different outlets similar to stress relief then emotional eating won't be such an issue.

#3. Self Sabotage

We have to understand that we are worth it. Doesn't matter who we are, what we've done or what we want. We are worth it and we deserve to happy, healthy individuals that enjoy life. Self sabotage has a whole lot to do with how to overcome binge eating.

#4. Letting go of the past

Anyway you look at it, the past holds us down. Anger, fear, not accepting who we are or where we're at in life holds of back because of what happened in the past. By letting go, find outlets like breathing exercises or meditation we can focus on what pain we're still holding on to.

On this edition of Exploring Mind and Body we're flipping the script here and it's my turn to be interviewed. Dr. Nicola Bird reached out to me and asked me if I'd like to be interview on her show. So needless it say it's an absolute please be asked to guest on someone else's show.

The topic of this discussion is Reducing Stress through Detoxing the body. As you might know, I love to talk about this subject. I truly believe our bodies are incredibly stressed out due to the amount of toxins we're putting in, on and surrounding ourselves with.

As you'll hear in the interview I reference Detoxify Yourself which is the book I wrote so you have a better idea of how to avoid toxins, prepare toxic free food, avoid toxic cosmetics and even to pay attention to a toxic environment which certainly plays a factor in our stress levels.

I think we all try to find ways where we feeling like we're moving forward in life. In this show I talk about how I feel like I'm moving forward and also how I feel like there comes a turning point in all our lives in which we actually can move forward and progress in the manner not only we hoped for but worked for.

I feel like at times we think we can do everything on our own when in fact we need help. I would say every successful person accepted help in some way. There are simply too many things to do and people to please to go at it alone.

I believe deep down we all have some sort of control issues. We need that control and without we feel like we lose a part of ourselves. Entrepreneurs, teachers, coaches and parents, we're all the same. We feel that absolutely no one can do it as good as us so we continue to struggle through life instead of accepting that help and understanding the only way to continue moving forward in life is to accept and carry on.

I'm often asked what type of supplements I take. When I respond, I get a puzzled look. The truth is I don't take supplements. There are many reasons I list in this show but for the most part I don't feel I need them. And truthfully I believe we could all take less (or maybe none) if we ate a more balanced diet.

I think we're all looking for something in this life, maybe it's peace, maybe it's happiness, maybe it's fortune and fame. Regardless here we are working towards a better life, through self improvement maybe even to find a deeper purpose.

Marc Allen put together his new book, Tantra for the West to help us understand life on a deeper level, maybe to find that contentment (however you see it), maybe happiness or maybe just a little understanding of how to enjoy your life. Marc explains how the word Tantra is about living in the now, how to appreciate each moment and how to push aside smaller forms of energy that affect our lives so much like anger, frustration, anxiety and more.

Living healthy is hard isn't it? I'm being serious here. We all know what it's like to try, try harder, and try again and see little results.  Think about all the changes you have to make when living a healthy lifestyle. You pretty much have to turn your entire life around, some entirely change everything.

We have to change our mind set, our approach to real health instead of a fad or diet, we need to realize we're in it for the long haul and that small steps are sustainable and that anything that comes easily will likely leave just as easily.

But just because it's hard, (I'm sure we're all in agreement on this one) doesn't mean it's okay not to try, not to put your best foot forward, not to get back up each and every time you get knocked down. The truth is we have excuses.

Sometimes I feel that dad's get a bad wrap simply because in the recent past it seems more like single mothers are more likely to raise a child. Then of course we forget about all the fathers do a great job of raising their children. You even see more and more single father's in the today's day in age.

I had some very influential men in my life growing up that helped me turn into the person I am and I have friends that are incredibly caring and loving new fathers that are going to raise the bar for the next generation of parents.

I feel like in this day in age there's a whole lot of pressure to be a parent. I truly believe we are products of our environment so will it being the norm to get married young and have children what's one to think even they aren't sure or aren't ready to be a parent.

In this day in age I believe most of us have the mind set of more. We want more things instead of considering where it will go after it breaks and how the environment will be affected. We want bigger, louder, better when we don't think about quality over quantity. What about less instead of more and keep the 'better'?

And I'm not just talking about the thing we have, I'm talking about the way we go about life. What about looking at better quality food because it will give us the energy we need, what about a quality workout which could be shorter and efficient and you could get more out of it because it represents quality not quantity?

It's hard to believe 4 years ago I came into this town I'm now living in with only a thought of running a business and looking for a way to market. It was difficult trying to get started, it seems like when you come into a small town (at least this one) many are closed off to the 'new guy'.

As difficult as it was, I knocked on doors of gyms in the area but no one seemed interested in having me around. I found a list of health and wellness businesses in the area, called each one of them but found little interest as well. Not to be deterred, the truth is I didn't have another option, there really wasn't any turning back. If I was going to make a run at putting food on the table through my own business I had to push forward.

I knew I had to find different ways to market, so I went in the studio and presented them with an offer of trading services. This idea wasn't exactly welcomed but after I continued to persist an offer was returned to me to host a 15 minute health and wellness show.

Are you aging or evolving? Have you ever thought about it, have you thought about the difference? This all has to do with our mind set and what we accept in this life. Do we feel it's acceptable for our health to decline as we get older? Do we feel like less mobility is on the way? If we change our mind set, if we push those limiting beliefs to the side, we'll soon realize the only thing that holds us back is our mind. And we'll understand we evolve as we get older, not age.

Recently my email account was hacked and not only did 'I' send out many spam emails to all of my contacts but I was receiving them as well. First of all, my sincerest apologies to anyone that was contacted and may have had their day disrupted because of this.  It pretty much took up an entire day for me to fix this issue with changing passwords, apologizing and clearing up what shouldn't have come from my account.

It makes me think how vulnerable we all are. At times I feel like I live in my inbox, it's how I communicate. Email is how I talk to clients, set up interviews, have conversations with friends and family and in an instant someone or something negatively disrupted all of that.

It's funny how we spend out entire lives chasing material possessions isn't it? Then we wake up one day, we're a little bit older and wiser and we figure out material possessions don't make us happy. The only thing that makes us happy is family and friends and what we contribute to the world. But that doesn't matter now, now does it.

We want bigger houses, fancier cars, shinier jewelry (the ones that come in the blue box). All the while all we're doing is masking who we are, we're hiding behind material possessions thinking more things will make us happier when all the while we know deep down, new things doesn't fulfill any deep need or want we're looking for.

The Power of Accountability is incredible because it seems as thought with a little accountability we could accomplish great things. This topic came because of a story I want to share with you coming from one of my clients. Now most of us know the pressure of being in a work environment where co-workers and even customers and clients are bringing in all types of goodies, treats and unhealthy snacks. So my clients to me when someone offers them something unhealthy, they say 'no thank you, if I eat that, I'll have to tell Drew I ate that'.

I thought this was so simple it's genius. Here's the issue, many of us know what it feels like when we eat something unhealthy. We feel guilt, we usually get a sugar boost, then a crash, have little energy and struggle to get through the day. There's a good majority of people that actually want to avoid this but problem is, we have so much external pressure to try this or eat that so we don't hurt someone's feelings.

This interview on Energetic EyeHealing with Dr. Roberto Kaplan was an absolute pleasure. I've been looking for an eye expert for quite some time and feel so fortunate I came across Dr. Kaplan.  Here's the issue, we as a society accept our eye health to decline as we age, which isn't much different than our expectations regarding our overall health.  I wanted to find someone that had the same beliefs as I did and could explain how we can actually improve our health naturally. I'm quite certainly, I wouldn't be able to find anyone better for the job.

Course you're not exactly able to hide behind windows but I feel that many of us try to hide in the open. We try to hide who we really are when all the while most can see right through us. And even if they can't, this about how difficult it is, think about how much energy it takes to front a smile all the time. How much energy you spend masking who you really are.

I believe each one of us have a gift to share with the world and it starts with out own authentic selves. I feel that many of us have hidden talents that we don't share with the world because we're afraid of what others might think. It's certainly not easy letting yourself be vulnerable to judgment, disapproval or naysayers.

Personally, I believe we can look at increased stress rates, weight gain and even injuries to how we internalize issues in our lives (Internalizing - Stress, Injuries and Weight Gain). The issue is, something stressful comes up in our life, we may have been wronged, disrespected, hurt or embarrassed. The initial action isn't the issue, the issue is how we deal with the emotions that arise from a situations like this.

Some people can let go and move on, others are hurt for a period of time and then also move on, but a good majority of us hold on tightly to those hurt feelings, and internalize them. We push this situations and these feelings down so deep we may have them inside us for years, even our entire lives without addressing them.

So I was sitting in my house the other day and just finished drinking a green smoothie. Then I looked to my left and on the table I noticed a new green plant I just picked up at a local farmers market. Then I saw a basil plant a friend just gave me on the window sill. Finally I thought about all the green food in the fridge, how I just made a real fruit post workout drink and how we just finished with a this Vegan Detox Challenge.

I felt like everywhere I looked I was surrounded by life. Plants, and green food and everything that represented life in some form. Then I started to think about the opposite, what didn't represent life in my life and how I could continue to put more things in my life to make me feel more alive an vibrant.

Why do we treat our loved ones worse than we treat perfect strangers? It sounds funny, maybe even odd but it's the truth. And I'm not saying we should treat strangers any worse, we should be kind to everyone equally but especially those we love most. Those that mean more to us, those that we love should be treated with love and respect but instead we take out our anger and frustration on those we love the most.  It would be a good idea to consider how we treat others no matter who they are or what they mean to us.

Child obesity is a major issue in today's day in age. We have highly processed food, refined sugar in just about everything, and I really believe we can and should do more about it. Scary that this is the first time the younger generation is not expected to outlive their parents.

Scary that major dis-ease is now being found in children that not too long ago was only found in adults. When it comes down to it, the only place to look is at each one of us, each adult, each person individually that needs to take control of their health; not only their health but their children as well.

So many times in life we put ourselves last, we don't believe we deserve to be better or live a better life, and more thank anything we feel like we don't have time for ourselves. This love yourself detox is to show you that you are worth it, that you deserve to be happy and healthy and that you do have time but more so that you are able to make time for yourself.

This love detox is an absolute eye opener when it comes to the way you treat yourself. Truthfully we treat our one body, the only body we have like a waste dump. We walk around more stressed out that it's hard for us to think straight, we snap at the littlest things because we're worried about everything else; we sleep seldom because of stress, the toxins we put in our body and with what we surround ourselves with being noise and our environment.

It's time take some time for yourself, it's time to show yourself you can make time, you do have time and it's time to help yourself understand you are worth it!

In this show I talk about how to set and achieve proper goals.

Far too many of us aren't setting goals anymore and when they do they're so insignifant we can't fail. What's the point of setting a goal we can't fail?

Find something substantial, something that will awaken that inner giant in you and inspire your day!

On this show I wanted to talk about how I was able to extend a few pleasurable moments I had over the holidays with loved ones.

I link both Anxiety and Depression to living in the past and future when our answer is living in the moment. I truly believe we can avoid the slipperly slope of medication if we look to living in the moment instead of the past or future.

The main reason I wanted to talk to Marney was because she likes to talk about fun, and I'm all about fun. As much as my topics seem to be serious at times, I love to have fun and not only is this book fun but so is Marney.  Personally I think we as a society believe you have to be serious and stern, walk around in a suit with a straight face and go to meetings all the time to be successful.  I don't think that's true and I was so happy to hear Marney talk about her perspective of how you can find success while having fun as well.

During our interview Marney goes over how her book is separated into 3 major categories, Hop, Skip, Jump. She also picks one of her favorite 'exercise's from each chapter and explains how it can benefit your life.

I know it's not easy making decisions, I know most of us usually want someone else to decide, but I don't think we realize how important making decisions are.

First of all decisions form our destiny; where we work, our financial situation, our family, where we live. Absolutely everything is determined by the decisions we make. And we we stop making decisions, if we don't exercise our decision making muscle than we slowly have more and more difficulty making decisions for ourselves.

The topic on today’s tip is the stress we put on our bodies by highly processed food.

We put an incredible amount of stress on our bodies by eating highly processed foods. I’m talking about everything from breads and pastas to chips and crackers. It would be a good idea to remind ourselves that there is usually toxins in the form of sugar, food coloring, msg, fillers, additives and other preservatives in these foods to make them look good, taste good and keep the on the shelf as long as possible which rarely means they’re healthy for us.

When we consume these highly processed foods that contain a number of toxins we’re putting an enormous amount of stress on our bodies over all, and that’s not even to specify when we have digestion issues, more directly acid reflux or indigestion, headaches, allergies like nasal issues, out of the blue headaches, and even sleep issues.

In Alberta Canada we live in an area where we’re pretty much vulnerable to how much we can control in the winter time when it comes to weather. -32 degrees Celsius (-25 Fahrenheit) is a reality for us up here and could be a daily occurrence for long stretches at this time of year.

With blizzards and cold weather, road conditions, along with tires and conditions of vehicles (although many times it doesn’t matter what type of vehicle you have) it seems like choice is taken from us at times (don’t get me wrong though, the ultimate choice to live here is ours).

There are times throughout the winter where we literally are not able to travel because it’s too dangerous, highways are shut down or we simply don’t want to leave the house. At times this makes it difficult to run a business, make it to work, or take the kids to school.

In the effort to #supportlocal and today being #SmallBusinessSaturday I walk into this one store and had an incredible experience. Beautiful store, tons of cool items, many #local and handmade items, and the service was exceptional.

Those big box stores (even though I know some are run locally) are usually filled with cheap items on sale that will break without much use, they’re cheap in price and quality, they’re made from somewhere around the world in likely difficult living conditions. And don’t get me wrong I support some of these and know owners that do their best to offer quality service and a service that’s hard to find otherwise. What I’m saying here is MOST of the time, those big stores have little customer service if any. Their main goal is to produce sales and that’s it.

One of the most frequent questions I'm asked from young entreprenuers is 'how do you deal with the negative people that come out'. So I thought I would address it here in this show and let everyone know how I deal with it.

This interview is with founder of Primal Blue Print Mark Sisson.

Mark's health philosophy?

Really, my health philosophy is surprisingly simple. I follow a diet based on an understanding of evolutionary science. I think it’s more important to eat, move, and live according to how humans are designed and not according to society’s artificial developments of the last 100 years. Fortunately, this type of lifestyle is not only incredibly healthy, it’s quite simple.

In a nutshell:

  • Fresh, nutrient dense, high antioxidant, preferably locally grown/naturally raised food choices
  • Daily activity – whether it’s the gym or a walk along the beach, it all counts
  • Plenty of quality sleep, sun exposure, play, and intellectual stimulation
  • Avoid all sweets and sweetened beverages. Once you break free, they lose their allure
  • Time for fun – don’t take anything too seriously
  • Ethical behavior – because what goes around comes around
  • Taking responsibility for yourself and your life – openness to new things and ideas

  • I asked Brian if I haven’t fell in love with Yoga just yet, do I any hope to do so.  I think you’ll be surprised at what he had to say.  Honest and real, sometimes there are other things we love. Just because we don’t love one thing (in the case for me yoga), he says, I’m sure there are other things you love to do.
  • I asked Brain how do you forgive and let go as a parenting yogi.  The answer was, to set this act intentionally, put it out there and receive.
  • I loved how Brain talks about learning from our children.  I told him I have the pleasure of teaching a children’s fitness class and always come away with a lesson or story to share with others.

This is my most candid interview to this point.  In fact, Karen and I didn’t officially open the show like I do, there’s absolutely nothing formal about the interview (except for intro, extro and sponsor mentions) but Karen and I talked and laughed and openly had a conversation about her book and life and everything else that come up.

I couldn’t have been more wrong, and once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. The title is really what got my attention, and after I started flipping through it and reading the content I was pleasantly surprised to understand that it was about food, lifestyle and even exercise. Holistic pain relief covers such a wide array of health issues, cures and prevention I couldn’t imagine someone picking it up and not getting something out of it.
