Kathrine Switzer has long been one of running’s most iconic figures. But when she was inducted into the U.S.A. National Women’s Hall of Fame last year, it was not just for breaking barriers being the first female to finish the Boston Marathon, or last woman to win the NYC Marathon, but also for creating positive global social change. Because of her, millions of women are now empowered by the simple act of running. |

I’ve decided that I’d like to do something this year for those in need. I’ve wanted to do this for awhile now but never took the initiative. It seems like more than ever local families are in need. I also understand food banks could use our help more than ever. I know there are so many organizations out there that are doing incredible things. Organizations I could help out, in fact, when I tell people what I’d like to do, many say, ‘why don’t you help _____’. The truth is, I want to do my own thing, but I want to do it together. I could have helped another organization but truthfully besides some food items here or a gift there, I haven’t done as much as I’d like to. Others say, ‘wait till you have more time to plan’, when I hear that I think to myself, how many families can we help this year that will appreciate that I don’t wait for another year. I think, how many families could we have helped if I started this 5 years ago when I first thought of it. So I’ve decided to start a Campaign called:

In this show I talk about why January is the WORST time to start any type of health and wellness program. Research shows only 8% of people get past January when starting a program in the new year. Then we have financial issues with all the Christmas gift spending. Packed gyms, colder weather, icy roads, not to mention being in a new environment while tons of other people are standing around waiting for equipment. On top of all that with the unhealthy habits we are creating now with Christmas parties, desserts, appetizers and more, we're pretty much setting ourselves up for failure in the New Year. More on why you should start today in the show!

With Thanksgiving coming up I thought I'd offer some Thanksgiving Holiday Nutrition Tips which can be used during any holiday season. I thought I'd try a different format on the show this week. We have so much great content and so many incredible guests I thought we'd reach back and pull out a couple fantastic interviews on Stress to help you understand how to reduce stress in different ways. I brought back Dr. Ciaramicoli author of The Stress Solution to share some of his tips and insights with us. Briefly Dr. Ciaramicoli is a licensed clinical psychologist and the chief medical officer of soundmindz.org, a popular mental health platform. He has been on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and chief psychologist of Metrowest Medical Center. And we've also have Rick Titan who is the author of Crush Stress, and has first hand experience on living a stressful lifestyle as a professional athlete which has brought his to teach others how to reduce stress. |

I recently took a trip to the Big Apple and I had such an incredible experience I wanted to share it with you. The buzz of the City that never sleeps alone is something I've never experienced before. It actually took me a couple days after I left to realize how much actually goes on there. When you're in it, in most things in life it takes awhile for you to take a step back and realize what actually happened. From homeless people to those that lived in apartments that cost $10,000 a month! It such a crazy and incredible experience to see so many different things, feel different emotions, brush shoulders with thousands of people in a day and feel the exhaustion of all of that at the end of a day. There is so much to do is NYC I feel like you could go there for a month and still not see everything. But what I did see and what a I did experience, I share with you in this show. I hope you enjoy. |

So I invited Matt on to talk about his experiences, what it's like to travel and play and go to school all at the same time as an athlete. I remember my days of traveling and playing, team bonding, new experiences and more. This show brought back some great memories that I'll always cherish. |

We all know how great it feels to open up the windows and get rid of old junk or things we haven't used all winter when spring rolls around. When you open the windows you are not only bringing fresh air in the house but new energy as well. It's the same as getting rid of things you don't use or need. You feel so much better because you are releasing stagnant energy as well, which is why it's so important in learning stagnant energy on a regular basis. This keeps our stress levels own, we have less emotional baggage and our spirits are lifted as we walk around with less weight on our shoulders. Winter is coming (or is mostly here) BLAH. There is little to look forward to except more winter BLAH ;). The days are shorter, nights are longer, less Sunshine, less activity, less fresh air. A whole lot of things that wake us up, make us feel good and give us energy is gone. It's important to recognize this and take action before we're stuck in 'winter depression' which is pretty difficult to get out of. It's easy to curl up on the couch, and do nothing because it's cold and dark outside. Then of course there's winter weight, more misery, comfy clothes ;), an unending cycle of less than positive stuff going on. Time to take action TODAY before our unhealthy habits turn into rituals.

I can't say I ever understood going through the motions, I always figured if you're going to do, you may as well do it well. I think about all the things we do half way or even multitasking (which is another myth), and wonder why not do it 100% if you're going to do it at all? In this show I talk about the benefits of going full tilt and avoiding going through the motions. What I've found when putting all the effort in I could possibly muster and what I've found the odd time when I don't. I understand we an automatic knee jerk reaction when it comes to the word failure but when you think about it and if we break it down, we can realize failure is a good thing. In fact as many of us know, without failure there is no success. Which doesn't mean we still don't fear it. In this show I talk about how we need failure to succeed in the gym. Why we have to fail if we want to find success with our health and fitness goals. I hope this show helps you understand failure helps us push past our limits, it helps us find out what those limits are, how to push past our comfort zone (and find out what it is). Show Notes:

Pre workout nutrition comes up quite a bit, truthfully I stay away from this question because it can become quite complicated. Depending on your goals, your sport time of day you're working out, how long your workout, etc all play a vital role in what type of nutrition you should be consuming before a workout. In this show I go over the very basics of what you should be having nutrition wise before a meal. Understand that this could vary depending on where you're at with your fitness routine but make no mistake about it, nutrition before a workout is very important when considering optimal health and getting the most out of a workout. Louise Landry is nothing short of inspirations as we talk about how she will accept no limitations. At age 56, a stroke survivor and more active than people half her age, Louise continues to push her limits and inspire those around her. Louise has been a part of Monthly Membership since is started over a year ago (at the time of this post/recording) and has been with us for whole food detoxes before hand. Along with workouts throughout the week, weekly yoga and NIA classes Louise stays active all the time. As a stroke survivor and limitations in eye sight and her left arm Louise doesn't let anything hold her back, in fact you might say she does more than the average person regardless of what limitation might be put in front of her. Dorothy and I traveled to Lethbridge to run with Louise for her first 5K after training for only 4 months. She'll tell you herself she doesn't love running, but I think the challenge is what keeps her going. She actually signed up for another 5k that she hopes to run in the winter to raise money for the food bank. In this interview I asked Louise if she had any advice for someone that might say they are too old to set a new goal or go after something that might interest them. She said, 'give it a shot, there's always a way around any limitation you may seem to have. Take it slow, schedule your workouts in and work progressively toward your goals'. Truly an inspiration. Thank you for all that you do Louise, we couldn't be happier we found you.

There are so many benefits to working out at home instead of the gym. I hear complains about traffic to and from the gym, lack of time to workout, the extra costs of gym fees and more. So I thought, why not write down some tips on why workout at home instead of the gym. 5 Reasons to Workout at HomeMore efficient workoutsGyms were meant for body builders, from squat racks to isolation machines. If you're not a body builder and you aren't injured, you can get a whole lot more out of your workout by doing more functional movements that are efficient and will get you the results you're looking for. Save TimeThere is driving time, there is traffic, there is even waiting in line to check in. Avoid all that by working out at home. Save MoneyGyms fees, money for gas, possibly parking fees. Course there are hidden fees, even cancellation fees. New shoes, gym clothes and more. It seems like there is always a reason to spend more money when you are working out at a gym. Workout at home and by pass all those extra fees. Waiting for EquipmentThis goes along with saving time. It seems like especially when you're in a rush there is always someone on the machine you want. There's a good chance no one is working out in the same area you are when you're at home. Avoid the Creepy GuyWe all know what it's like to be watched by the creepy guy. He's likely asked you for your phone number or is thinking about it as he engages in awkward conversation while you're trying to get your workout in. *** This Show is brought to you by Puradyme, a company that is truly interested in improving your health! There are so many nutrition myths out there, so much misconception, so many 'perceived truths', which I why I decided to put down my top 5 nutrition myths. There is information coming from every angle, but is it valid, is because 'we've always done it that way', or maybe there's even truth to it. Regardless, let's stir the pot a bit and give you something different to consider. Top 5 Nutrition Myths #1. Gatorade 'For hydration and electrolytes' FALSE! - Gatorade has toxics, colouring, sugar and more. Any product that has ingredients you can't read, pronounce or spell, I highly recommend staying away from. #2. Dairy Milk 'Milk does a body body good', for many this is false as well. Now I'm not saying everyone should stay away from cow's milk or dairy products but if you have digestion issues, if your child has sleep issues or if you get nasally after your morning bowl of cereal or glass of milk with dinner you should consider trying a different type of milk. Course whatever issue you may have doesn't always have to do with milk or dairy. We should consider everything we put in our body and learn and understand if it's harmful or nutritional. Milk is at the very least worth considering given it's in the top 3 allergens in most lists. #3. Meat Protein 'You need meat protein to gain muscle' FALSE - today we have more vegan athletes than ever which include bodybuilders, long distance athletes and more. You don't need meat protein in every meal and you certainly don't need protein from meat to gain muscle. #4. Counting Calories Counting calories could very well be the least positive thing you do for your health. Every calorie is not created equally. More times than not, counting calories does more damage than good thinking we're doing a good thing for our body for example when we consume '100 calories' or proceed food for example thinking it's healthy because it only has 100 calories. #5. Supplements This one may be hard to believe but in most cases supplements do more damage than good. No question low quality, cheap and discounted supplements are detrimental to our health, increase toxins and are simply harmful. Look for good quality supplements or stick with food and get your nutritions from whole foods. Related Links:

On this show I'm joined by Adam and Shoshana Chaim from the Plant Trainers podcast who actually interview me on this edition of Exploring Mind and Body Drew's passion for baseball led him to research about nutrition and workouts to help him stay on the field longer and move up the ranks from College to the professional level. He started experimenting with his own body and tested which food made him quicker, stronger and what foods would even help him heal quicker. He eventually discovered that plant-based nutrition can make a big difference in his performance as an athlete. He became stronger, healthier and even slept better. He started to have more mental clarity than ever. The secret, all the while, was the food that he was putting into his body. This eventually led him to design "Complete Truth Protein", which is a whole food supplement. Now, he is now a full time health and wellness advocate hosts his nationally syndicated radio talk show is author of "Detoxify Yourself"and has a new passion of helping other live healthy lives.
Show Notes: - grew up in Canada - goal as an athlete to be a college athlete - went down to california played college ball - started to experiment with own body. - researched about nutrition, workouts to stay on the field longer. - started doing fulltime - plant-based nutrition - common misconceptions on becoming an athlete - toxic food can cause stress - genetically modified food - alcohol, tobacco, soy, coke, redbull - greens can energize you in the morning - fruits and vegetables - non-gmo foods (fruits and vegetables) - foods you can afford - locale farmers - access to organic food - drew tadia's green smoothie ingredient - stayed away from dairy - injuries roots from stress on our body *** Thank you so much for your interest in this show of Exploring Mind and Body, if you haven't done so already please take a moment and leave a quick rating and review of the show in iTunes by clicking below. A three-kilometre fun run with his sons in 1981 was the catalyst for the then-out-of-shape, overweight John Stanton to realize he had to change his lifestyle. A food industry executive who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, he began running secretly before dawn because he felt self-conscious about having his neighbours see "this chubby little guy" who could only run from lamp post to lamp post before having to take a walk break. John went on to run over 60 marathons, hundreds of road races and numerous triathlons, including the Hawaiian World Championship Ironman competition. His pre-dawn runs would ultimately become John Stanton's 10:1 run/walk combination that has helped close to a million people do everything from learn to run to complete marathons, upright and smiling. I have been loving teaching yoga in Vegreville for about 6 years. I find the reason that I love to do yoga myself is that I always feel better for it! And it is for this reason that I love to teach yoga - because it is so gratifying to be able to help other people feel better too! Prior to my certification, I worked for fifteen years in the school system as an Educational Assistant, so it was an easy transition to teaching in the studio. I came to the practice myself for the physical benefits, as I think many in our Western culture do. But I quickly found that many of the practices, though simple, were very profound. The act of simply becoming aware of your breath and your body, and how you're feeling physically, mentally, emotionally, can have such a huge impact on stress and anxiety levels. Yoga translates as yoke or union, and by simply reconnecting our physical, spiritual and mental aspects, we can come to find more balance in our lives. I am married to Cam, and we are happy parents to six grown children and two grandchildren. We live and work on a farm south of Vegreville, as well as work together in another business. Aside from my love of yoga, I enjoy time with our family, the outdoors, hiking, snowboarding, and water sports. |

In this show I wanted to talk about the importance of a team. It's seems like more than ever I'm starting to realize how important a team is not only in business but in life. Think about your work place, there's a good chance you work with a team. You have a boss or manager, you have coworker and other employees all doing different things but working together for one purpose. This is no different than a family. Each one of our family members contribute in some way. Course sports is no different. Everyone has one goal, everyone has a job or an objective and without that part done, we miss a big part of what we're trying to accomplish.

Dr. Jason Fung grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada..... I went to the University of Toronto at age 17 to begin studies in Biochemistry. By 23, I completed medical school at the U of T, and began my Internal Medicine residency there. Finishing my specialty of Internal Medicine, I chose Nephrology (kidney disease) as my sub-specialty. Each field of internal medicine draws its own personalities. Nephrologists had the reputation of being a ‘thinkers’ specialty. There are a lot of intricacies of fluid and electrolytes, and I enjoyed these puzzles. I studied Nephrology at the University of California, Los Angeles mostly at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and the VA Wadsworth. Looking back, I realize that it must have been a little disconcerting to patients in the hospital to be treated by a doctor who looked about 18 years old. I returned to Toronto in 2001 to start my career in Nephrology, where I still have both an office and hospital practice. Type 2 diabetes is by far and away the leading cause of kidney disease, and I treat many hundreds of patients with this disease. Many also have obesity. By the early 2010s my interest in nutrition, combined with my professional focus on obesity and T2D had led me directly to the diabesity puzzle.

In our current day and age, we are using the quickest, least personal, and least effective means of communication possible; texting. So much information about what the other person is thinking and feeling is lost and left up to interpretation. This is often the cause of relationship issues; we are lacking personal connection and the understanding that we are all just human beings, real people. In this episode, Drew talks about his recent, refreshing experience with talking on the phone with some of his listeners. He talks about why he wanted to talk to them in this way, how it went, and how beneficial it could be to incorporate more of this interpersonal communication in our everyday lives.

5 Worst Detoxes Ever was inspired by the constant news I hear about so many try a 3 day detox to improve their health. I don't agree with short detoxes or fasts, I feel that many times we actually put more stress on our bodies by removing all nutrients and even some toxins. Take sugar for example. We as a society are addicted to sugar, which means if we remove all sugar our bodies go through withdrawals which puts an enormous amount of stress on our bodies both mentally and physically. The the higher road, moving in a sustainable manner, step by step is the way to see sustainable results. So let's get into the 5 Worst Detoxes Ever! Full show notes at Exploringmindandbody.com

Shin Splints How to Prevent and Treat is something I wanted to talk about because the question just happened to come up in our Monthly Membership from Dallas. I love questions because it gives me a better idea of what you want to know, so let's talk about shin splints! Show Notes: The first thing you should know is if you do nothing they will absolutely get worse. You don't want them to get worse because then they'll get in the way of you reaching your health and fitness goals. Undestanding what shin splints are - which is muscles actually tearing away from the bone, should help encourage your to do more things to prevent. Regarding Prevention It's important to check your shoes and make sure they aren't too old. 90% of people wear shoes far past the time they should be replaced. This causes issue from everything to knee and ankle pain to shin splints. Replace your shoes on a regular basis especially if you're running on them. Pay attention to surfaces you're running on - hard surfaces i.e. concrete will cause shin splints so try to run on a track, grass or even dirt. Tape from time to time before shin splints come if possible. Find a professional to help. Compression socks are another great way to prevent shin splints. Always heat before activity and ice afterwards. Strengthen - use a rubber band, walk backwards, or crunch a towel with your toes. |

The Wizard of OZ is without a doubt my all time favourite movie which is why I wanted to talk about the Nutrition of OZ. I have a deep love for food, real food, food that naturally energizes your body; that heals, cures and prevents. I also have a deep childhood love of everything about the Wizard of OZ. So I thought, why not put the two together? In this show I'll be comparing the 4 main nutrients our bodies need in each and every meal, and I'll also be matching up the similarities between the main characters of the Wizard of Oz and how they relate to one another. Show Notes: Dorothy - fibre and antioxidants from fruit and veggies the main character of the movie and what should be the main character of your nutrition. The Cowardly Lion - protein and the myth behind them both. The Tin Man - Heart Healthy Fats and how the two are related. The Scarecrow - directly linked to carbs because carbs don't make you fat and you need energy from them. As much energy as the scarecrow has. |

I feel it's so important to support local which is why I brought on Erin Braybrook who is the owner of the Carstairs Flower Shop Sparkling Dahlia. I wouldn't say it's the easiest thing to do to start your own business, in fact for me personally it's the hardest thing I've ever done. The truth is, many of us that start our own businesses rely on local to support to run a business, feed ourselves and our families and without that local support, the service simply isn't available anymore. Given businesses should be run correctly, there should be comparable prices, the customer service should always be on par and the quality of products should be there as well. In this interview I ask Erin, what supporting local means to her, how and why she started her business, how difficult it can be, what the long hours are like and deep down, why she decided to put her shop up in the first place.

On this episode of Exploring Mind and Body I have the opportunity to interview Donald Altman who is the author of Clearing Emotional Clutter. I feel like so many of us carry around our past, we're weighed down emotionally and haven't learned how to let go. I like the example Donald used in the interview as he talks about Hoarding. Many of us have watched the show hoarders, and many of us have thought, 'how could they live that way'. I'd imagine if you could look deep into our emotions, you'll find emotional hoarding in most of us. I wanted to talk about relationship weight gain because the truth is, it's easier to gain weight in a relationship. I want to thank Dallas for bringing the topic up and asking me to offer my insight on the subject. In this post I'm going to give you 5 tips in 5 minutes on relationship weight gain, why it happens and why it's easier to gain weight when you are in a relationship. I would like to note before I get started, I'm not saying you will gain weight if you get in a relationship, I'm just saying it can be easier. And of course you may find the exact opposite happen if you get together with someone who loves working out and eating healthy because then you can do this together and live healthier, however that's rarely the case. 5 Tips in 5 Minutes: Comfort When you find someone you enjoy being with many times its enough to simply be with them. You don't have to go out, buy dinner, dress fancy. You simply enjoy each others company which means you're perfectly comfortable doing nothing but sitting on the couch watching a movie. The only downfall to this is, not only do you go out for dinner less but you tend to go for walks less, or other other activities that helps burn calories. Self Imagine Let's be honest here, you found your love, you're in a relationship and many people get 'comfortable' with their self image. No doubt a positive, we should all strive to be comfortable in our own skin, be confident in what we look like and have a positive self imagine. However, if you gain a few lbs you notice it less. If you eat an unhealthy meal, no big deal, sweat pants and a sweater lounging around won't show the pizza every weekend for a month anyways. If you miss a few workouts, you don't think about it much because you're cozy at home and aren't going out as much anyways. Lack of Support We feed off of each other especially in a relationship. If one person doesn't feel like eating a healthy dish it's much easier to say, 'fine let's order take out'. If one person doesn't support your workouts for example then you feel guilty leaving the kids with them. Having Some Help We know what it's like not to have any help. You have a job, kids, then you have to prepare meals and all by yourself. Lack of help seems like you're trying to run in quick sand while someone is standing there watching you. What's worse is if it's a loved one, and you can't figure out why they won't help. Support and help mean everything, unfortunately if you don't get that help, it's much easier for you to skip that healthy meal, toss a frozen pizza in the over or have microwave popcorn for dinner instead. Extra Time Extra time isn't something we have. In the last tip we talked about family, kids, job and a spouse...one that likely doesn't help to boot. So we certainly feel we don't have time. We don't have time to make a grocery list, plan our meals for the week, plan our workouts or go to the gym. It's time consuming to do all these extra things, and it's much easier to simply skip it all together. But Wait! .....There's Hope! I understand relationship weight gain, in fact I see it all the time. It could be a friend you haven't seen for a number of weeks or a number of months and you finally see them and can't figure out where that 10lbs came from. A new relationship would be a good guess. Not all relationships cause you to gain weight but it is common especially if you don't have that support with or from them. But there is hope and that's why it's so important to find a supportive community to be a part of. Of like minded individuals that want to live healthy, that can offer that support, that ask and answer questions. A supportive community means everything ESPECIALLY if you don't have it at home. But Wait There's More Within our monthly membership we also offer meal plans that include recipes and grocery shopping lists to save you time in the grocery store in the kitchen. And we cover fitness too, with all at home weekly workouts (no equipment required). If you're looking for a supportive community, a safe place that will offer a positive influence on your life, for more details click here. *** This show was brought to you by Coaching with Lucinda. Binge eating is a major topic because we all do it in some way or another. We could have serious eating disorders or we could have trouble picking up a bag of chips and not finishing the whole thing. Whatever it is we all deal with binge eating on some level which is why I want to discuss how to overcome binge eating. In this show I go over 4 levels of Binge Eating, which include understand stress and how your stress levels contribute to binge eating. Emotional eating goes hand in hand with binge eating which it's why I'll talk about that next. Self sabotage is also a major subject that needs to be addressed and finally we'll go over letting go of the past, and help you understand what's weighing us down and how to let go. #1. Stress If we can understand that stress is the main reason we binge eat then we'll give ourselves a better opportunity to overcome bing eating. It's so important to work on releasing that stress valve with consistent and conscious effort because we don't have a natural stress release. Writing, getting away, talking about your stress, and especially exercise are all ways to help you reduce stress which will ultimately help you overcome binge eating. #2. Emotional Eating Emotional eating goes hand in hand with binge eating. If can better understand when our emotions are high, look to find different outlets similar to stress relief then emotional eating won't be such an issue. #3. Self Sabotage We have to understand that we are worth it. Doesn't matter who we are, what we've done or what we want. We are worth it and we deserve to happy, healthy individuals that enjoy life. Self sabotage has a whole lot to do with how to overcome binge eating. #4. Letting go of the past Anyway you look at it, the past holds us down. Anger, fear, not accepting who we are or where we're at in life holds of back because of what happened in the past. By letting go, find outlets like breathing exercises or meditation we can focus on what pain we're still holding on to. *** Thank you so much for your interest in this show of Exploring Mind and Body, if you haven't done so already please take a moment and leave a quick rating and review of the show in iTunes by clicking below.
